I had an interesting conversation with an individual earlier this week that got me thinking about the role we play in our own lives.
For some people, having constant outside affirmation and a steady group of cheerleaders is critical. Without it, they find it difficult to keep moving forward. We all need cheerleaders and being surrounded by a group of people who care is important and extremely valuable. In fact, I wrote about the ‘Value of an Inner Circle’ way back in 2009. I concluded my post with the following musing:
The inner circle has merit. In moments of great success, members of your inner circle will keep you grounded. In moments of great darkness, they will be the light you need. In ordinary moments, your inner circle will keep you accountable, speak the truth, and always have your back.
Don’t get me wrong, I still believe in the power of an inner circle but I’ve come to believe that we must be our own biggest cheerleader.
As I have shared with you in the past months, I’m training for a series of races including a 7K, a half-marathon and a full marathon. The training is going well but I’ve noticed one thing – it’s a lonely road and I’ve had to be my own cheerleader on those longer runs. The temptation to stop, quit and even second-guess my decision to run these race, especially the full marathon, has hit me on several occasions.
In those difficult moments, I’ve had to figure out a way to keep moving. I can’t expect to have a cheering section with me every step of the way. As I prepare for the marathon, I must equally train my body and my mind. I must train my mind to push through the pain and the challenges of the 26.2 mile course and, more importantly, to cheer me on and motivate me to cross the finish line.
The same applies to life … I must be my own biggest cheerleader. Yes, my inner circle is there and they are a valuable part of my cheering section but on the road of life they may not be on the sideline ready to cheer me on exactly when I need them. That’s why I must be my own cheering section.
Believe in what YOU do.
Be your OWN cheering section.
Be well and make it a great day!
