A few days ago, my daughter Cecilia noted that I’ve been reading a lot more since we moved out to Lake Minnie Belle. She may be right!
This past weekend I finished my friend Tommy Spaulding’s latest book called “The Heart Led Leader: How Living and Leading from the Heart Will Change Your Organization and Your Life.” (affiliate link)
If you consider yourself a leader, this is a book you probably want to pick up and read. Tommy offers a compelling case on why “leading from the heart” is an effective way to make a difference in your organization and in your own life.
There’s nothing earth shattering in this book – at the end of every chapter, I found myself nodding in agreement with what Tommy was saying. The thing is this – although I agree that leading from the heart is important, I know that I fall short of doing exactly that at home and at work.
From the beginning, Tommy is clear about one thing – to be a heart led leader and to lead from the heart means one thing and one thing only – you must lead with LOVE.
Leading with Love – this may seem “revolutionary” for some and the “only way to go” for others but, as Tommy writes, it actually works and can change the fabric of your life and your organization.
Becoming a heart led leader is, as he explain in the book, all about making the “18-inch journey” from your head to your heart. He spends a chapter on every “inch” of that journey and shares real-life examples of people he knows who have mastered this journey. The “inch” that resonated with me the most is the one that focuses on transparency. Tommy shares this insight:
To truly lead from the heart, you have to open yourself up and allow others in. Transparency goes beyond telling the truth. At its core, transparency is about being entirely candid about the facts regardless of the news, good or bad. And it’s about willingly communicating insights about yourself and your business even when it isn’t required.
On paper, this seems like a simple thing to do, but I know from experience that when fear takes over, it’s a challenge to be transparent and to be a heart led leader.
Throughout the book, Tommy speaks about the work he continues to put in to be the heart led leader he wants to be. Through his story, and the story of the people we meet in the book, Tommy gives us the road map we need to make the journey from the “head to the heart!
I encourage you to get your copy of The Heart Led Leader today and, once you’ve read it, pass it on to someone on your team!
Back in 1993, I had an opportunity to spend a year on the road with Tommy Spaulding. We were both staff members in Up with People’s Cast E 1993. I remember sharing several meaningful conversations with Tommy and I was fortunate to reconnect with him a few years ago – after he became a best-selling author – and have him as a guest on my podcast following the release of his first book. You can listen to our conversation here.
