Last week, during one of my morning commutes, I listened to episode #16 of Gimlet’s StartUp podcast. The entire episode focussed on Gimlet’s “secret formula” or “competitive advantage” when it comes to producing podcasts.
The concept of having a “secret formula” or a “competitive advantage” seems to refer, in most cases, to the business world. Entrepreneurs use this kind of language and invest countless hours in making sure they’re clear on what makes their business unique and one that others should invest in.
It may not seem natural to transfer the language of business and use it in a more personal way but I think we should do just that.
The One Thing We All Have
Back in 1988, just prior to the Calgary Winter Olympics, David Foster – composer of the theme song for the games that year – made a comment during an interview that has stuck with me for all these years. My memory may fail me a little here, but I recall him saying something like this:
I believe we all have the same amount of talent. In fact, I have the same talent as the athlete who’ll be participating in the olympic ski jumping event later this week – I’m using mine to write great music and he’s using his to do amazing things on the ski jump.
What I take away from David Foster’s comment is this – we all have a secret formula, a competitive advantage or a secret ninja skill*.
That advantage, that one thing that makes you shine bright in the world is… YOU.
You have the secret ninja skill!
You are the secret formula!
You are the competitive advantage!
We Fail To Remember
The sad thing is, we seem to forget that very truth. I know I do.
More often than not, I discount the person that I am and the contributions that I make. You may have the same challenge – you doubt yourself when no one else does.
When all is said and done, we all need you to remember this …
You are uniquely positioned to make a difference in the world. You are the “competitive advantage.” You are the key that unlocks the door.
Your family, your friends, your community need you to unleash the real you. We’ve never doubted you and you shouldn’t either.
The only thing left to ask is simply this … What are you waiting for?
The term “secret ninja skill” was coined by my friend Kurt Thompson – entrepreneur, business coach, non-profit leader/executive and all around great guy.
