Soundtrack To My Life: June 2015 Edition
Lately, I’ve been captivated by the new music being made by musicians & bands I was listening to when I was in high school.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve had Colin Hay – former front man for Men At Work – on heavy rotation during my long bike rides. His solo project titled ‘Gathering Mercury’ is just a delightful collection of songs. My favorite tracks – and trust me there are a few good ones – have to be “Half A Million Angels” and “Dear Father.”
One thing is certain, there are better singers out there but what I appreciate about Colin Hay is this – the guy sure can write great songs! He’s a fantastic lyricist and since I can’t write lyrics to save my life, I appreciate someone who can!
Take the lyrics to the song “Invisible”:
My footsteps leave no trace through the shifting sand
My reflection disappears as I reach out for your hand
It’s not over till the sun falls into the sea
And I am floating in the sky looking down on me
Powerful lyrics like this are everywhere on the Gathering Mercury project. He’s also included a catchy tune that took me back to his days with Men At Work. “Send Somebody” is the lead track on the album (and the first single if my memory serves me right) and it’s a good one.
If you enjoy great “singer/songwriter” music I encourage to add Colin Hay’s album to your collection. As you listen, you might just find yourself reminiscing about your high school days and pulling out an old Men At Work album! Regardless, I really think you’ll enjoy this collection of songs.
I’m including below a video for the song “Dear Father”:
If you haven’t heard it yet, check out his acoustic version of the Men At Work classic “Land Down Under” – it’s bound to bring back some great memories!
Be well, make it a great day and happy listening!
