Soundtrack To My Life: May 2015 Edition
Music plays a big role in my life. I play it. I write it. I love to listen to it.
Last month, whilst doing some cleaning around the house, I was listening to (and passively watching) CBS This Morning: Saturday. There are two segments on that show that really interest me, but for the purposes of this post, I’ll focus on the “Saturday Session Segment” – the one that features music.
That morning, the featured band was “The Decemberists”, an American indie folk rock band from Portland, Oregon. I’d heard the name before, but have to confess that I wasn’t familiar with their music. They were on the show to promote their latest album titled ‘What A Terrible World, What A Terrible Year.’
This was their first project in several years. The song they played was called The Wrong Year.
Right from the get-go, I really liked what I was hearing but it wasn’t until Colin Meloy, the band’s lead singer, sang the opening lyric that I was hooked. I had the entire album purchased and downloaded before their segment on CBS This Morning was over.
I’ve been listening to them on a regular basis now and find them to be the perfect companion on my bike rides!
There’s a uniqueness to Colin Meloy’s voice that’s refreshing and mesmerizing. When I read up on the band, I quickly learned that Meloy is also an author. He’s got a way with words and, because of him I’ve now learned a collection of new words including “fey”, “prevaricate” and “eidolon.”
The imagery conveyd through the words he sings is amazing. Take this lyric from the song called “Lake Song”:
Seventeen and terminally fey
I wrote it down and threw it all away
And never gave a thought to what I paid
All sibylline, reclining in your pew
You tattered me, you tethered me to you
The things you would and wouldn’t do
You noticed how I never had a clue
What great lyrics! And it’s not just on that song, the entire album is a gem when it comes to lyrics.
If you’re familiar with The Decemberists and don’t have their latest collection of songs, I recommend you get the album today! If you’re new to them, just like I was, you’ll definitely want to check them out! To get you started, here’s the segment from CBS This Morning: Saturday Edition from a few weeks ago.
Be well, make it a great day and happy listening!
