It should come as no surprise to any of you that when I am not being a father and husband, producing a podcast, working for a healthcare foundation or trying to live a healthier lifestyle, I am a musician.
For more than 30 years, I have played the piano and, in high school, started writing music. Back in 2009, I released my first CD of original music titled Until Tomorrow Comes. This first collection of songs took more than fifteen years to find the light of day. When it was released, I promised myself that I would not wait another 15 years to release a second CD.
I’m excited to report that in early July (actual date to be announced soon), my follow up CD will be released. Simple Things – the title of this new offering – is a collection of 10 new instrumental piano songs. I am excited to share it with the world and delighted with the fact that only 2 years have passed since the first one.
The Power of Community
For this new album, I opted to try something a little different. Although it is much easier today for independent artists to create and publish their music, there is still a cost to do so. For me, it’s important to have my music on iTunes, Amazon and other digital outlet but I do like having the physical CD available for people to purchase. From a purely personal perspective, being able to touch and feel the packaging of my CD makes it more real to me. Getting Cd’s made does require some resources!
For Simple Things, I opted enlist the support of a great online tool called Kickstarter. Simply put, Kickstarter is a new way to fund and follow creativity. Through the Kickstarter platform, I was able to offer an opportunity for friends and fans of my music to invest in the new CD by pre-ordering a copy and taking advantage of some fun rewards.
The experience has been extremely rewarding and will make it possible for me to release this new collection of music much sooner than originally planned. The support from existing fans, family and friends is overwhelming and extremely humbling. There is just something about knowing that there is a community of supporters out there who believe in you and are willing to pledge support, in advance, for your music.
I may have written the music for this new CD but, thanks to Kickstarter, the “backers” of my project will make it possible for me to share this collection of songs with the world. For that, I am forever grateful!
There’s Still Time
There’s still a few days left for you to get involved and add your name to the list of supporters. If you like “instrumental, pop-styled piano compositions that connects and inspire,” I encourage to check out my project on Kickstarter and pre-order your copy of Simple Things!
