It’s time to find a new normal.
It’s time to commit to a different way of doing things.
What we are doing today is not working anymore.
No, I did not get up on the wrong side of the bed today, but I did get up at 4:30am and that may be part of it – I may not be thinking clearly. Here’s some background…
Tuesday night was a busy night and I wasn’t able to hear/watch the State of the Union and Marco Rubio’s response. Thanks in part to various podcasts and programing on my local public radio station, I was able to get my “political junkie” fix after the fact.
I’ve listened to both speeches and I’ve had enough the shenanigans, double-talk and all of the political spinning and posturing. I’ve come to expect it from politicians but what worries me is that this type of behavior has infiltrated the conversations that are happening outside the Washington Beltway.
When was the last time you actually engaged in a conversation with someone who has an opinion that is radically different from yours?
Like politicians, we’re starting to speak in soundbites and one-liner’s. We’re so consumed by our way of thinking that we can’t even entertain the possibility that there is another side to the story or that we’re wrong. We’re forgoing the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations out of fear we’ll be proven wrong or we might change our minds and look bad. It’s time for all of us to grow-up.
About a year ago, I wrote a post and was questioning whether I was guilty of self-segregation (read post here). I can count on both hands and feet – and then some – the times when I’ve purposely chosen to avoid difficult conversations or held on to my particular set of beliefs without considering the other side of the story.
I have an opportunity each day to make a different choice; to make a better choice. I have an opportunity to change the way we interact with others.
I have the opportunity to be vulnerable and open to the possibilities that can come when I concede that my way is not the only way.
It is time for a new normal.
It is time for me to be more open to your way of looking at the world.
I’m ready and I hope you join me …
Be well and make it a great day!
