Three years ago, I did away with New Year’s resolutions and opted to take a cue from author Chris Brogan and selected three words. If you’ve read my last few posts, you got an idea how these words became part of my life in the past 12 months!
I’ve found the process of using three words to guide both my personal and professional life more rewarding than identifying a series of resolutions that will be quickly forgotten by the end of January.
Here are the posts that talked about my 3 words for the past two years:
My Three Words for 2013
+ ADVENTURE: I chose this word for one simple reason – I need to be bold and not be afraid of taken the road less traveled. When I say adventure, I’m not talking about aimlessly moving forward without a plan. I’m talking about be open to the possibilities and not always waiting (like I often do) for all of the right pieces to be in place. I’m intrigued about what taking my podcast to the next level could mean both professionally and personally. I’m intrigued by the possibilities that can be made available now that I have my CFRE designation. I’m intrigued by the content of conversations I’ve had with a close friend in the past few months and what that could mean for the future. I’m choosing ADVENTURE because I want to be open to the possibilities.
+ SIMPLICITY: I need to simplify a few things in my life. My schedule is crazy, our family schedule is crazy and I have too many irons in the proverbial fire. The idea for 2013 is to de-clutter and make more room for the things that are truly important. In the category of being truly important: my family, my health, my career and the few other activities that bring me an incredible amount of joy … running, being a musician and hosting a podcast. Bringing simplicity in my system will also be key – between my professional life and personal life, I need handle the stuff that comes with all that I do in a much better way. I’m counting on Evernote to help me on that front!
+ COMMUNITY: The idea behind this word comes from the audience that I serve. The Conversation Hub podcast has experienced some incredible growth in the past year and it has been a privilege to bring meaningful conversations to my audience. When it comes to music, I’ve laid low this past year, but I am amazed at the people who continue to download, stream, purchase my music. It is my goal to reconnect with my the community that enjoys my style of music. When I think of community, I think of bringing people together. My podcast serves as a great example of this; but I was reminded of the power of community when I invited people to join me for a run on National Day of Running last June. Several people reminded me recently that bringing people together is something I do well. I plan on doing more of this – bringing people together that is – as we move into 2013. Stay tuned … I already have a few ideas up my sleeve!!!
There you have it: ADVENTURE, SIMPLICITY, and COMMUNITY! The key words for 2013.
One more thing … don’t think that last year’s words aren’t still part of the mix! I brought in the New Year with a 10K run at Minnesota’s Annual Polar Dash Run! Here’s proof positive (link to image) …. and yes, it was really cold!
Happy New Year!
Be well and make it a great day!
