How many personality tests have you taken?
For most of that number is quite high. It seems at every turn, we are all being asked to complete assessment so that our teammates, our employers, and others have a better sense of who we are and how they should “interact” with us.
Now, let me be clear about one thing – I think these assessment tools are important and provide good insights. My concern comes when organizations and individuals overuse them. Too many times we use these tools to box people in or to justify our behaviors
Inevitably – if you are part of an organization, participate in a leadership retreat, engage the services of a professional coach – you will be asked to take one of these assessments. Utilized correctly, these tools and assessments will provide you with great insight on who you are and what makes you fly. But in the end you must always be yourself.
Your gifts, your weaknesses, your quirks and quarks make you the person you are. When you accept who you are and play to your strength – you will be successful.
Don’t try to be what somebody wants you to be. Focus your energy on the following:
- Be Yourself – God made you. In His eyes you are perfect and He “has plans to prosper you, […], plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29: 11)
- Be Authentic – directly connected to item 1. People want to be in a relationship with the real you. Don’t compromise or conform to please others.
- Give Your Best – Provide value to everyone you interact with. Trust me, it will pay dividends.
You will have detractors. Some will find it difficult to work with you and, as a result, will try to box you in. Don’t let them – always be yourself.
