Spend a few minutes on Twitter or search Google and you’ll find countless people ready and willing to tell you how to grow your fan base or increase the number of followers you have on Twitter. Don’t waste your time, just read Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World and you’ll have step-by-step guide on how to do it!
Michael Hyatt (a guest on episode 45 of our podcast) speaks from personal experience and that is why this book is one you need to add to your collection. In today’s world – with the all the social media channels available to us – it would be easy to assume that you can build your platform in a matter of minutes! That’s simply not true.
Here are three things I took away from reading (and listening) to Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World.
1. It’s Not Rocket Science: Sometimes I have a tendency to slave over the details and, as a result, I delay doing something until all the stars have aligned perfectly. Whether you are new to social media or a long time user, you can benefit from Michael’s experience. Every chapter includes a list of things items you should think about and, when appropriate, a list of specific actions you can take.
2. Be Authentic: One of the reasons I follow and read Michael’s blog is simple – he’s genuine, speaks from the heart and he makes it personal. If you want to grow your platform you have to be authentic. I’ve noticed that when I am open about my personal story it leads to more meaningful conversations. Michael is clear on this – social media “requires our personal participation.”
3. Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day: Time for a confession – I’m a little impatient. When I started The Conversation Hub podcast, I was convinced it would be a hit. Well, 105 weeks into the project, I’m starting to get some great traction. Hearing Michael talk about his progress and how it didn’t come overnight was extremely reassuring. On several fronts, I’m on the right track and I’m doing what he recommends. Where I’m not, he has laid out a road map to help me get there.
I thoroughly enjoyed Michael’s book! In fact, I listened to the audio version and went back to the book to jot down my notes. My copy is now all marked up and I have a clear set of actions to execute (note: the disclosure statement below is one that Michael recommends. Thank you Michael!) Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World is the road map you need to follow is you have “something to say or sell.”
