President Barack Obama is wrapping up his trip to the African continent later today. During his time there, he visited the countries of Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania.
Today, we’re in conversation with John Kagaruki. John makes his home in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s capital. I first met John in the summer of 1988 as we both prepared to travel as students with Up with People. It was a delight to reconnect with him after 25 years and to get his “first-person” perspective on President Obama visit to his homeland.
About John Kagaruki
John Kagaruki is the COO of Nuru Infocomm, an Application Service Provider based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He is also the founder of Eyecue Media,
With a background as a visual designer and experience in marketing, branding and audio engineering, John became interested in the potential of the mobile phone after meeting up with his partner and CEO in 2008. Frustrated by the high cost of mobile application development and programming which was a roadblock towards the development of their agricultural mobile marketing platform, John decided to learn how to code and developed their first mobile application in Java and then moved on to the Android platform, becoming an iOS programmer along the way.
When not honing his coding skills and thinking of the next great app, John does the occasional production work and sound engineering at events and plays the bass guitar for his local church band.
You can follow John on Twitter at @eyecuejohn.
John is also the founder of The Tanzania Music Foundation, an NGO which aims to help musicians in Tanzania achieve their goals and dreams by dealing with issues like copyright violations, exploitative contracts, substance abuse, financial counselling through workshops and awareness campaigns.
