If you caught last week’s episode, you heard me speak about my favorite public host – Dick Gordon.
It’s my pleasure to bring you a remix of my conversation with Dick. I had an opportunity to be in conversation with him in the early days of our podcast!
About Dick Gordon
Dick Gordon’s reporting has taken him around the world from South Africa to India, Moscow to Iraq – not to mention many remote towns in his native Canada. When people ask why he started The Story, Dick remembers a train trip he took through the former Soviet Union. On his way to interview a government official, Dick walked the train aisles and spoke to passengers. One by one, he heard their stories, and realized he was learning more from the people on the train than he’d ever learned from any government official. It was a seed, and he tucked it away.
Back in the U.S., Dick landed at The Connection at WBUR in Boston, as host of the daily news show. In 2003, Dick took his staff to Bagdad to broadcast from the U.S. invasion. When The Connection folded, Dick was sought out by a passionate group of WUNC listeners who brought him to North Carolina and asked him to design a new show. The show debuted in 2006, and works to find people whose experiences illuminate the news, and showcase the power of stories.
